Eczema is a term that refers to a group of inflammatory skin conditions. The most common type of eczema is atopic dermatitis. Manifestations include pruritic, dry, thickened and excoriated skin. Conventional therapy of treatment includes moisturizers, antihistamines & topical or oral steroids.
Eczema is a symptom. It is a red flag. It is your body communicating there is something going on. In general, your skin is an external manifestation of what is going on internally. So in functional medicine, we are investigating, we are looking at the root cause of the eczema, not just covering up the symptoms. Eczema can be caused by various things such as ingestion of particular foods, dysbiosis in the gut, leaky gut, yeast overgrowth, liver dysfunction and environmental triggers.
Various treatments may include elimination diets, food testing, supplements/herbs that support the liver and/or gut, healthy fatty acids and natural antihistamines. Red-light therapy can also be extremely helpful and we offer this in all of our locations.
