A few weeks ago, I had the incredible opportunity to join Tick Boot Camp—a conversation that took me deep into the heart of holistic healing, the science of neuroplasticity, and innovative approaches to treating Lyme disease. In our discussion, we explored not only my journey through chiropractic school, neurology, and functional medicine, but also how we can shift from merely “killing the bug” to transforming the terrain of our health.
During the episode, I shared how our practice at Turbo Health is built on the belief that every patient’s journey is unique. We’ve assembled a team of diverse specialists—from naturopaths and MDs to osteopaths and licensed psychotherapists—because healing isn’t a one-size-fits-all process. I explained that:
Every Patient Is Unique: “Not everything is a nail,” I said. Our approach means looking beyond just the symptoms to support the entire physiology of the patient.
The Host Matters Most: Whether dealing with Lyme disease or other chronic illnesses, our focus is on strengthening the host—the body that must fight off the infection. This requires a blend of reducing the pathogenic burden and boosting the body’s innate healing capabilities.
One of the highlights of our conversation was our deep dive into neuroplasticity—the brain’s remarkable ability to rewire itself. I shared stories from my training and practice that illustrate how our nervous system adapts:
Interference Removal: Just as a chiropractor works to remove interference in the nervous system, so too must we address the “bad inputs” that lead to unhealthy neural pathways. I likened this process to turning a crooked, poorly used dirt road into a smooth highway for proper neural communication.
Building New Pathways: We discussed how the brain creates shortcuts through repeated experiences. The good news is that even if our brain has formed detrimental habits, it’s never too late to retrain these pathways and foster a healthier state of being.
A significant part of the discussion focused on the role of antibiotics versus natural alternatives in treating infections like Lyme disease. I emphasized:
Collateral Damage of Antibiotics: While antibiotics have saved countless lives, their overuse can harm the body, especially by damaging the mitochondria, the very engines that power our cells.
Embracing Nature’s Pharmacy: Natural antibiotics such as Cryptolepis and Cat’s Claw Elite were highlighted as effective, low-risk alternatives. These options not only target pathogens but also support mitochondrial health, ensuring the body’s energy producers remain intact.
I also dove into practical tips—like the importance of vitamin D, glutathione support via NAC, and the strategic use of biofilm disruptors—to help patients navigate the complexities of chronic infections.
Reflecting on my own path—from a curious student in chiropractic school to an experienced practitioner in neurology and functional medicine—I recalled those early moments of uncertainty that blossomed into a lifelong commitment to learning. One memorable moment was when a patient challenged me to “learn or quit”—a turning point that reshaped my approach to patient care and reinforced my belief that true healing encompasses the body, mind, and spirit.
