FDA Reverses Course on Hormone Therapy

In a landmark move, the FDA has officially updated its stance on hormone therapy for women, effectively overturning two decades of warnings that stemmed from the 2002 Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) study. For years, that study shaped how doctors and patients thought about hormone replacement therapy (HRT), but it turns out the findings were incomplete and, in many ways, misleading.

What Happened in 2002:
The original WHI study was halted early after initial data suggested increased risks of breast cancer and heart disease among women using hormone therapy. This led to widespread fear and the infamous “black box” warning– the most serious caution the FDA can issue. Millions of women stopped or avoided treatment that could have supported their long-term health and quality of life.

What We Know Now:
Decades of follow-up research show that the WHI study was deeply flawed: it included women much older than the average menopause transition age and didn’t properly separate risk by age, type of hormone, or delivery method. New data confirm that for healthy women under 60 or within 10 years of menopause, hormone therapy is safe and can offer meaningful benefits for heart, bone, brain, and overall well-being.

Why This Matters:
The FDA’s decision to remove the black box warning is a monumental shift– one that opens the door for more balanced, personalized approaches to hormone therapy. It validates what many practitioners and women’s health experts have been saying for years: hormones, when used correctly, can be life-changing.

Looking Ahead:
At Turnpaugh Health, we’ve always approached hormone therapy differently: prioritizing individualized care, evidence-based dosing, and comprehensive wellness support. With upcoming certifications through The Menopause Society and new educational initiatives, our team is committed to helping women reclaim their health with clarity and confidence.

Stay tuned: In the new year, we’ll be sharing more in-depth content on hormones, metabolism, and women’s health– helping you make empowered, informed choices.
